Part of Goldings Hill in Loughton was closed for more than five hours while emergency services dealt with the incident, which took place at around 1.30am today.

An Essex police spokesman said the pair's Subaru Legacy appeared to lose control and struck several trees in Epping Forest.

The driver, a 30-year-old man from Middlesex, was pronounced dead at the scene. The front-seat passenger, a man in his 20s from Braintree, Essex, sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital in Walthamstow, where he is in a stable condition.
