A MAN was being questioned by police today after he was arrested in connection with an air gun shooting spree which saw a man shot in the face and more than 40 cars damaged.

Suffolk police today said that a 21-year-old man from Diss, Norfolk, was arrested yesterday evening.

He was held in custody at Felixstowe police station overnight and was due to be questioned further today.

The arrest came as police revealed the damage bill from Sunday's incidents was far greater than first thought, with 40 cars damaged rather than the 17 initially reported.

A police spokeswoman said: “A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and common assault after a number of incidents in the Ipswich, Woodbridge and Felixstowe areas on Sunday night.

“It's thought more than 40 vehicles were damaged and a 21-year-old man was struck in the face with what may have been an air weapon pellet in Clapgate Lane, Ipswich, about 11.30pm.

“The 21-year-old man was arrested last night, and is currently in custody at Felixstowe police station where he is being interviewed by detectives.”

The arrest came two days after a night of carnage which left residents faced with a huge clean-up effort and insurance bill.

Police began receiving reports of damage to houses and cars at 9.10pm on Sunday when a window of a house in Church Street, Orford was smashed by pellets thought to have belonged to an air gun or BB gun.

Shortly before 10pm residents reported shots being fired at two cars in Quay Street in the village, shattering the windows.

A short time later the windows of at least ten cars were smashed by an air gun in Orford Road, Cavendish Road, Beach Road West and Tacon Road, Felixstowe.

At about 11pm five vehicles in Theberton Road, in the Gainsborough area of Ipswich, had their windows damaged.

Forty minutes later a 21-year-old man was struck in the face by a pellet, thought to have been shot from an air gun, while he was outside the Co-op store in Clapgate Lane, Ipswich.

Police today renewed appeals for anyone with information about the incidents to call Felixstowe CID on 01473 613500.
