A LORRY driver today described how he saw a man kick another man who was lying on the ground in the head.

Nick Brett, who was giving evidence at Norwich Crown Court, said he saw an incident in which "a man was kicked in the head like a football".

The incident occurred outside Kartouche Nightclub at about 11.40pm on August 14.

Mr Brett was giving evidence at the trial of Lewis Carroll, Steven Lowe and Toby Woods.

Carroll, 32, of Crocus Close, Ipswich, and Lowe, 24, of Spring Road, deny murdering Phil Hoi Phat Lui of Nacton Road.

Woods, 27, of Cosmeston Street, Cardiff denies violent disorder.

Mr Lui, whose parents live in Felixstowe, died in intensive care nine days after he was attacked.

Responding to questions from Crown Prosecutor John Caudle, Mr Brett said he witnessed the incident from the cab of his lorry which was waiting at traffic lights in Commercial Road, Ipswich.

He said: "I saw a gentleman hit another gentleman in the face. One was lying down the other (the attacker) was crouching over him."

He then told the court that the attacker left the man lying on the ground before turning back and kicking him in the head.

The attacker was described by Mr Brett as a white male, about 5ft 10in tall and of medium or large build.

He continued by telling the court that he had to use the brakes on his lorry to prevent himself hitting the attacker as he crossed the road.

Mr Brett said that he telephoned the police from a mobile phone before driving from the scene.

Courteney Griffiths QC, for Carroll, asked: "The man you saw assaulting another man did he at any stage run off in the direction you were travelling in?"

To which Mr Brett replied: "No".

He confirmed it was dark and that he had not got a good look at the attacker's face.

Later the court heard from Kerry Witney who had attended Kartouche Nightclub on Monday, August 14.

She told the court she had seen a white man holding another man in a headlock inside the club. At an identity parade in October, she identified that man as Toby Woods.

She also said she saw two other men attack the same victim at different stages of the evening. At separate identity parades she picked Steven Lowe and Lewis Carroll as the men involved in the attack.

Courteney Griffiths asked Ms Witney if she had been given the name of Lewis Carroll. She replied that a friend had told her his name on the night of the attack.

The trial continues.
