A COLCHESTER man who stabbed his wife to death in front of one of his eight children after sneaking out of an open prison has been given a life sentence today.

Jurors took an hour to find convicted conman Anthony Sweeney, 37, guilty of murder following a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Sweeney, 37, a member of the Salvation Army, had denied murdering his wife, Lisa Sweeney, on February 21 this year.

It was alleged that he stabbed Mrs Sweeney 40 times at their home in Henry Laver Court in Balkerne Heights, after she told him she wanted a divorce.

Judge Christopher Ball QC will decide later how long Sweeney should serve before being considered for parole.
