Damage was caused to Bowmans Bar and Lounge in Queen Street and Belvoir estate agents and Ipswich Crown Pools, both in Crown Street, as well as haart estate agents, Gentlemans Relish hairdressers and Mecca Bingo Ipswich, all in Lloyds Avenue, police said.

Iceland supermarket at Sailmakers, the former Tower Ramparts shopping centre, and premises in Northgate Street including Tennial Personnel and Bedwells Florists were also damaged at around 5am, a force spokesman said.

The incident was reported to police by a member of the public who alleged a man was “smashing windows with a metal pole”, a Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said.

At the scene, police arrested a 25-year-old man, of no fixed abode, on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon. He has been taken to the Martlesham Police Investigation Centre where he is set to be questioned by officers today.

Police are not looking for any other suspects and no police officers or members of the public were injured, a force spokesman confirmed.
