JUST two weeks after Ipswich market finally moved to the town's Cornhill, it's having to miss a valuable day's training on Saturday.

The traders knew there were three dates that they could not set up their stalls before they agreed to the move, which has so far been highly successful.

This Saturday the Cornhill is playing host to a special fair – booked months ago.

And on Tuesdays June 25 and July 16 the market will not be able to come to town because the Cornhill has been booked for Jubilee events.

"We knew we could not have those days before we agreed to come here, but the alternative was to wait until later to move," said Mike Young, chairman of the traders' co-operative which runs the market.

"But we've had a lot of people come up to us and say how disappointed they are that we won't be here.

"It's quite heartening – it shows that after only a couple of weeks people are used to us being here and don't want us to be forced out."

Mr Young said some traders remained concerned that they could be forced to leave the Cornhill at the end of the six-month trial period for the market.

"We still hear that some people in Civic Centre are determined that we will eventually move back to their car park. But the market is proving very successful here," he said.

Ipswich council leader Peter Gardiner said all members of the Labour group were prepared to give the market a fair trial, and so far it had seemed very successful.

"I'm not aware of any determination to move it back – it certainly hasn't come from us," he said. "We are very keen to see the market succeed and have an open mind on its future," he added.
