A MAJOR police investigation was under way across Suffolk today after a masked gunman fired shots at a constable.

Armed police joined uniformed colleagues in a dragnet-style probe after the 31-year-old Pc was fired on in the Stradbroke area.

He had been called to investigate after an anonymous tip-off alerted police to a vehicle acting suspiciously in Wilby Road, Stradbroke.

A shotgun blasted through the night air but the officer, who has not been named, escaped without injury.

He was helping detectives with their inquiry today but was badly shaken by the incident.

Police in Suffolk alerted their Norfolk colleagues to the drama and patrols were stepped up in both counties. Suffolk police were today desperately seeking further details from the anonymous man who made the tip-off at 8.20pm yesterday.
