Young children in Suffolk have been presented with some exciting new equipment, designed to help them learn number skills in creative and enjoyable ways.

Children at Highfield Nursery, in Chesterfield Drive, Ipswich, had the job of testing out the 24 colourful handmade mats, all featuring Maths games. It was plain to see that they relished the challenge.

Each mat has a different theme appropriate for children aged three to five, including rhymes, day and night and the weather.

Members of the Suffolk East Federation of Women's Institutes made the mats – originally for a contest to be judged at the Suffolk Show.

Unfortunately this year's show had to be cancelled because of the foot and mouth crisis. But the WI members wanted to put the mats to good use and handed them over to Suffolk County Council's early education team.

The mats will be available for loan by nurseries and playgroups across the county.
