A STUDENT is celebrating after he and his teammates braved tough questions and a terrifying quizmaster to conquer the world of University challenge.

David Cox, a third year maths undergraduate at Magdalen College in Oxford, took his seat in the final, which was aired last night.

And the old rivalry between two of Britain's most prestigious universities was played out again as Mr Cox, from Ipswich, who is also a keen rower, faced his opponents from Gonville and

Caius College, from Cambridge.

The Magdalen team emerged victorious with a score of 190 to 160 and there were extra celebrations at the Oxford University campus as it was the first time one institution claimed the University Challenge trophy for the third time.

Mr Cox, a former Ipswich School pupil, said: "It really does feel like quite an achievement".

However Mr Cox, 21, admitted preparation did not always come in the form of swatting up from encyclopaedias and textbooks.

He said: "I am normally the science person as everyone else is history and classics. I had to brush up my science knowledge as well as popular songs.

"We did have quite a lot of time going to a pub and using their Millionaire machines and things like that. It was quite good fun. We do get on really well as a group of people."
