A MELTON social club can now open for extra time despite outraged residents claiming their lives are already being disturbed.

An application to extend the hours of Melton Sports and Social Club, off Lodge Farm Lane, caused a number of letters to be sent to Suffolk Coastal complaining about the venture.

But at a meeting of the south area development control sub-committee, councillors decided to allow the club to open until midnight every Friday and Saturday night.

Before the meeting, Melton Park Residents Association had said they wished to lodge a very strong objection to the application.

They had hoped that the district council would restrict the club to the agreed time limit of 11pm and also keep any late night extensions to no more than 12 a year.

Residents sent in 11 letters of complaint stating that the club was with increasing frequency flouting the existing conditions to stop trading by 11pm.

One letter said that the venue had originally been established to serve the remaining staff and families of the former St. Audry's but was now used as full business venture.

The building is often hired out for parties, weddings and discos.

Other residents claimed that the open nature of the nearby field means that sound from the venue carries to houses.

There were also concerns that extending the regular opening hours would increase noise nuisance and the risk of vandalism.
