The town’s first ever Memory Walk is taking place next month – and people from all generations are encouraged to sign up.

Charity volunteers at the Alzheimer’s Society are calling on young and old to unite against dementia – which is now Britain’s biggest killer – in Christchurch Park on September 2, 2018.

Walkers are given a choice of short or long walks, and both routes loop around past the mansion, war memorial and pond.

Debbie Foster, operations manager for Suffolk and Norfolk, said: “Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes.

“We’re calling on people with dementia, family, friends and teams from across Suffolk to unite against dementia this autumn.

“Walk with us at Ipswich Memory Walk to help defeat dementia.

She added: “Dementia devastates lives, but every pound raised through the Memory Walk will help us provide vital information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting for people affected by the condition.”

Every pound raised by walkers will go towards transforming the lives of people affected by dementia.

More than 12,000 people in Suffolk are living with dementia and over 350 people have already registered to take part.

The event is aiming to raise more than £106,000 to fund research and provide support for people living with dementia.

Bosses at the Alzheimer’s Society have pledged to invest £150million in the next decade in the search for better treatments and work towards a cure.

Registration for the Ipswich event closes on Thursday, August 30.

Participants are encouraged to bring their wellies and walking boots.

Event organisers said: “All routes will start and finish at the north-east corner of Christchurch Park, where there will be a hive of activity to get everyone ready for Memory Walk.

“Amongst the excitement, take a moment to reflect on who you are walking for and leave a message on the Memory Tree and watch it blossom through the day.”

Those interested in taking part are encouraged to register now at the Memory Walk website.
