CIVIC leaders in Mid Suffolk today backed proposals for a single unitary authority in the county.
Mid Suffolk District Council has agreed that the concept of a single Suffolk unitary council should be submitted to the Boundary Committee as its preferred option.
Among the other choices available was an Ipswich unitary and a rest of Suffolk unitary, and an East Suffolk unitary and a West Suffolk unitary.
Andrew Good, chief executive of Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “Mid Suffolk has taken a principled view of what is the best for the people of Suffolk, and that is a single unitary council.
“It is vital that Suffolk and its people have one single strong voice and that this is championed through strong leadership and very local delivery arrangements.
“We believe that one authority will bring the powerful and radical empowerment that our local neighbourhoods need and allow their voice to be heard wherever they are in the county.”
Tim Passmore, leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, added: “This is a principled decision that Mid Suffolk and its councillors took, and it is the best for Suffolk and its people.”
