AN IPSWICH bus service has had to be re-routed in a bid to protect drivers and

passengers from missiles that are being thrown by vandals at the vehicles.

The Number 1 First Eastern Counties service which runs from Sandyhill Lane into town, on 15 minute intervals during the day and every 30 minutes at night, has had to be changed so that it avoids the terminal at Sandyhill Lane.

Vandals had thrown all manner of items at the buses – showering passengers and staff with glass and debris. Luckily, no one has been injured during the mindless attacks.

Marketing director of First Eastern, Mike Payne explained: "We took the decision to divert the bus along Robeck Road and Holbrook Road so that the bus does not have to stop.

"This means the service will be constantly picking up passengers heading towards town and should mean that there are a sufficient number of witnesses in the area to deter attackers.

"Since we have done this the problem has been reduced to a reasonable extent. We have tried to come up with a solution that meets the concerns of passengers and staff but does not adversely affect the service and we feel that we have done so."

He explained that the Sandyhill Lane terminal was quite isolated and that the company has been forced into spending thousands of pounds on new windows for the buses.

Today a Robeck Road resident has pleaded with the troublemakers to stop the attacks, warning that the entire service may be taken away if they continue.

Penny Jenkins, who is also a member of the Greenwich Community Group, said: "The discontinuation of the service will happen if these attacks continue. These vandals must have parents or grandparents for whom a bus is their only mode of transport.

"The re-routing of the service has upset a lot of elderly and disabled people who can no longer get the bus – but I want this area to be a better place. I make a plea to the mindless vandals, who continue to harass the drivers, to stop."
