Anglia Railways is investigating why a train bound for London broke down today, creating delays for about 2,000 passengers caught in the backlog.

The 5.30am train from Norwich to London terminated at Manningtree, and blocked the main line for about 45 minutes.

A queue of trains built up until 7.45am, when the locomotive could be moved. Its passengers were transferred to another train.

But Peter Meades, spokesman for Anglia Railways said: "The worst affected trains were the 5.30am and the 6am services from Norwich which had several hundred passengers on board.

"The 6am service which was immediately behind the locomotive with a fault, was one hour late."

At the time of going to press, he said: "Other trains into London are delayed by 20-30minutes but services should be back to normal by 10am."

He added that about 2,000 passengers had experienced delays, and apologised for the incovenience caused.
