Snow showers will progress through the county today all be it a little lighter than we have seen previously.

Weatherquest forecaster Richard Jones said that the showers were pushing up from the south through the afternoon with 1-2cm of snow falling particularly in south and west areas of Suffolk and northern parts of Essex.

Temperatures will remain between 0 and -1C with 20- 25 mile an hour winds hitting the majority of the county though in some coastal areas this could be as high as 40 mph.

These winds will give a significant chill factor making temperatures feel more like -10C.

Mr Jones said that couple more centimetres of snow could fall tonight with wind speeds remaining strong.

The two elements combined could lead to “blizzard like conditions”.

Temperatures over night could dip to -4 or -5C.

Friday could see another 2-3cm of snow falling but this should be the last of the wintry showers.

Despite this the Met Office have now issued a yellow warning, this time for ice between midnight and 9am on Saturday.

The previous snow and rain will create ice patches on untreated roads on Saturday morning, making driving conditions difficult in more rural areas.

During the day on Saturday will temperatures reach above zero for the first time since the cold snap began with highs of 2 or 3C.

Rain and sleet showers will then take over at the weekend with temperatures reaching a high of 5C.

The higher temperatures will help to thaw out rural areas which are currently struggling.

Mr Jones described this weeks weather as “One of the most wintry weeks we have had for five years.”

Today marks the start of the meteorological spring but there will be no early spring warmth on its way.

Instead temperatures will remain below average for most of March and will only reach around 7-10C.
