A WOMAN was taken to hospital today after her car came off a roundabout and smashed through a wooden fence before crashing to a halt in a trolley port at Asda.

Firefighters had to cut free the woman from the wreckage of her vehicle after the roof of the trolley port came crashing down on her dark Blue Ford Fiesta.

No one else was injured in the accident which happened at Asda Superstore, Goddard Road, Ipswich, although three other parked cars in the car park were damaged.

Fire crews from Colchester Road and Princes Street had to cut the roof of the woman's car off as she had become trapped by both the roof of the trolley port and the car's inflated airbag.

The sole female occupant of the car was taken to Ipswich Hospital by ambulance. Her injuries are not thought to be serious.

Matthew Ware, a spokesman for the East Anglian Ambulance Service, said: "We received a call requesting our assistance to attend a road traffic accident.

"The driver was conscious and breathing but she did sustain some bleeding.

"We took one person to Ipswich Hospital but at this stage we do not know the extent of their injuries."

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 10.45am.

Jeff Noga, a manager at Asda, said: "We did not see what happened but we understand she came smashing through the fence from the main road and into the trolley port.

"It was a real shock and not something we are used to.

"The fire service got here really quickly and freed her from her car."
