Residents in nearby properties said that they were unaware of the incident but Hawthorn Road and Shepherd's Drive are both busy roads so passing motorists may have seen the men arguing.
One man, from Merrion Close, who did not want to be named, said that he had not seen the attack happen.
But he said: "It seems to me that people are too quick to pull a blade these days.
"I really don't know what the world is coming to.
"I think people are far less tolerant."
Janet Aldous, another resident of the Close said: "I am really shocked by it.
"It just seems to be happening too much now."
The drama happened at around 4pm on Saturday afternoon when the victim became involved in a row with the driver of a black Vauxhall Corsa, who is thought to be aged in his 20's.
It is believed that there were either one or two women also in the Corsa at the time.
The victim was driving a large, white panel van with a red stripe around the base while the knifeman's Corsa was described as 'new looking.'
Inspector Ben Cook from Suffolk police said the attack happened during a driving incident.
He said: "We are appealing for witnesses to come forward as there were several people in the area at the time."
