SUFFOLK police have said that traffic will be slow moving today following a lorry fire on the A14 Newmarket bypass near Exning.
The westbound road has been re-opened, but eastbound traffic was this morning down to one lane as repairs to the road surface were carried out.
The fire service said that paper debris was finally removed from the highway at 8.45pm last night, almost 16 hours after fire broke out in the trailer of a lorry carrying 30 tonnes of compressed paper.
Traffic was at a standstill for most of yesterday and caused tailbacks of up to 12 miles. At one stage, cars passing the fire had to be hosed down with water to protect them from the intense heat of the blaze.
Police set up diversions yesterday to take traffic away from the scene while they let the fire burn itself out.
Firefighters worked at the scene in four-hour shifts to watch the blaze and ensure debris was not blown across the road.
The Highways Agency carried out repairs to the damaged road surface between 6.30am and noon today.
