SHOTLEY mum Sharon Kennedy has been living in fear for months because she believes a huge hole in the wall of her council house is exposing deadly asbestos.

Despite the hole being there since last August Mrs Kennedy said that Babergh Council have failed even to come and look it.

However after input from the Evening Star, the council have finally managed to get in touch with her to repair the wall.

Her house in Queensland is due to be knocked down at some point. One of the reasons she claims they are being bulldozed is because there is asbestos in the walls.

The 38-year-old, who is wheelchair bound, said: "I wanted them to change the heating because I can no longer cope with shovelling the coal in.

"But the workmen came out and said they were not allowed to do any repairs because of the asbestos in the walls.

"We are not even allowed to put any nails in the walls for pictures or anything in case we disturb the asbestos."

The hole started from a crack in the wall, which was nearly six feet long. But when her nine-year-old son Dan accidentally fell against it, part of the wall came away exposing a gaping hole.

Paul Simon, spokesman for Babergh council said the first report the council had from Mrs Kennedy was on November 11 and nine days later they went and visited.

An external contractor was sent out in December but was unable to fully repair the hole as he could not seal it in at that time.

He said: "Since then we have tried to get hold of Mrs Kennedy to arrange a time that was suitable but have not been able to get hold of her."

Mr Simon confirmed that there was asbestos cement sheeting in the walls which is considered as a low health risk.

He said: "By its very nature asbestos does have some kind of risk but this is considered as a low risk."
