THE wraps came off the first part of a major £3 million Ipswich development today with the opening of a new Co-op Foodstore.

Beryl Fulcher, president of the Ipswich and Norwich Co-operative Society cut the ribbon to declare the Rosehill Centre branch well and truly open to customers.

It not only replaces the 100-year-old York Road store but expands on the lines sold in a prestigious 5,275 sq. ft. supermarket.

William Brown, chief executive officer, said: "We are delighted with this new development which demonstrates our commitment to food retailing in the convenience store sector and to providing a wide variety of good value products from a friendly local store.

The new centre – with 110 car parking spaces – has been built on almost ten acres of Co-op land between Derby Road and Felixstowe Road.

Eight full time and 25 part-time staff will work at the Rosehill Co-op including York Road manager Calvin Heath and his 16 staff who have moved to the new branch.

All the favourite regular Co-op lines will be available plus new sections for books, magazines and newspapers, Cuisine de France goods and hot Food to Go with a chicken rotisserie.

In addition to the Co-op Foodstore, the society built and handed over to Orwell Housing Association, ten one-bedroom houses with car parking space for 15 vehicles; new premises for Concord Video & Film Council and an Aldi store.

Aldi, part of the German-owned supermarket chain has taken possession of their building and it will be opened within the next few months.

n Opening hours at the new Co-op are from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm Sunday.
