A WOMAN died and her young daughter was left seriously injured in a crash between a fire engine and a car as the crew responded to a false alarm.
The tragic incident happened as the fire appliance was on its way to a call in Sheffield yesterday evening.
A 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of making a hoax 999 call.
The smash, which involved the fire engine and a Subaru Impreza car, saw a 36-year-old woman die and her ten-year-old daughter suffer life-threatening injuries.
The youngster is now in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
Both the police and fire service have launched investigations.
