A MOTHER who knifed her two daughters to death as they slept has today been jailed for at least 33 years.

Rekha Kumari-Baker had admitted the manslaughter of Davina Baker, 16, and Jasmine Baker, 13, on the grounds of diminished responsibility, but had denied murder.

However, a jury Cambridge Crown Court convicted the 41-year-old of two counts of murder after deliberating for just 35 minutes yesterday.

Kumari-Baker killed the girls with two kitchen knives as they slept in bedrooms at her home in Stretham, Cambridgeshire, in the early hours of June 13, 2007.

The court heard she had been distressed by the end of her marriage to the girls' father, David Baker and also that she was upset by the break-up of a relationship with boyfriend Jeff Powell.

During the case, psychiatrists told jurors that Kumari-Baker may have been retaliating against men.

It was also revealed that she left a note at the murder scene saying she did not want her children to get hurt as she had done and that they would not be a burden to anyone.

Today Judge Mr Justice Bean imposed two mandatory life sentences and said Kumari-Baker should serve 33 years before being considered for parole.
