AS a 45-year-old woman appeared in court charged with murdering a man, a family member shouted across the courtroom: "Stay strong for us."

Wearing a bright red T-shirt, Zena Burton spoke only to confirm her name and address as she stood in the dock flanked by two court staff.

Crying and visibly shaking, she dabbed her eyes with a tissue and glanced twice at relatives in the public gallery during the preliminary hearing at East Suffolk magistrates' court in Elm Street, Ipswich.

Burton was arrested on Thursday after the body of John Westgate, 36, was found in a flat in Dinsdale Court, Undercliff Road West, in Felixstowe.

Burton also lives at Dinsdale Court in Undercliff Road West, Felixstowe.

She was charged with murder last night after being questioned for more than 24 hours by detectives at Ipswich Police Station.

Burton's relatives told her to be strong, as she was led away to custody.

No bail application was made and the case was sent to Ipswich Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday September 18 at 10am.

A post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Michael Heath at Ipswich Hospital, has revealed that Mr Westgate died as a result of strangulation.

Police were called to the Orbit Housing Association flat – one of 33 in a 1960s-built complex - by a member of the public shortly after 10am on Wednesday.

The officers' visit followed a report that a body had been discovered.

Neighbours in the complex of flats were deeply shocked at the news of the man's sudden death, but some residents have also have told in the Evening Star how they knew little of him.
