A 17-YEAR-OLD was beaten to death today by Asian men in what Cambridgeshire Police believe was a motiveless attack.

The force has now set up a murder inquiry and is appealing for information following the incident in Peterborough that occurred at 1.15am.

The victim was walking along Bourges Boulevard (cor) in the city with his 19-year-old girlfriend. They had just left the Solstice Public House and were on their way home.

However, the youngster was then set upon by the Asian group and attacked. His girlfriend ran off in an attempt to raise the alarm, and managed to flag down a passing police car.

But when they arrived back at the scene, the 17-year-old man was already dead.

Detective Superintendent David Frankins (cor) said today: "There does not appear to be any motive for this senseless attack. A young man's life has been snatched away in a terrible tragedy and I am appealing for the public's help in identifying those responsible for the attack and appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

"The victim's girlfriend is obviously extremely shocked and traumatised by what has happened but she has been able to tell us that there were up to ten youths involved in the assault. While it is thought they are all Asians we do not as yet have any further descriptions and it is vital that the public helps us in order to piece together what happened.

"I would urge anyone who has any idea at all who may have been involved in this incident to contact us, no matter how insignificant they feel the information may be – it could be crucial to the enquiry."

Roads around the area have been closed to traffic, as has a local cycle path and footpath.

Cambridgeshire Police spokeswoman Catherine Feast (cor) confirmed that the victim was from the Peterborough area, but was unable to release his details until his next of kin had been told of the tragedy.

Anyone with information about the attack should contact Cambridgeshire Police on 01733 563232 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
