Organisers of the Kesgrave Music Festival today told of their pride after handing over the 13,000 raised at this year's event to St Elizabeth Hospice.

KESGRAVE: Organisers of the Kesgrave Music Festival today told of their pride after handing over the 13,000 raised at this year's event to St Elizabeth Hospice.

The staggering total, raised at the festival in August, will help fund a nurse for six months.

For the fourth year running, friends and family of Kate Moyes organised the popular festival in her memory.

Since they started their fundraising efforts four years ago, the total raised in tribute to Kate, who was only 29 when she died of cancer at the hospice, has now smashed through the 50,000 mark.

Debbie McCallum, who originally came up with the idea of staging a music event in the town, and her dedicated committee of fundraisers handed over the cheque to the hospice's community fundraiser Laura Backhouse.

Mrs McCallum, of Kesgrave, said: “We are overwhelmed by the support we have had over the four years from businesses and the local community which allows us to make such an important donation to the hospice.

“It is great that we can donate this money in the knowledge that it is directly helping to support the fantastic nursing care the hospice provides.”

Janice Hulett, community and corporate fundraising manager, said staff at the hospice in Foxhall Road hugely grateful to the organisers of the festival.

She said: “We are very grateful for their hard work throughout the year and the amazing amount they have raised to help patients, their carers and families.

“This year's donation will help fund a nurse in the in-patient unit for six months.

“The nurses play a vital role providing specialist care for pain relief and other symptoms, whilst striving to maintain the patient's wishes and dignity. This donation will really make a difference.”

Around 4,500 people attended this year's festival which featured live music from 22 bands on two stages at the Kesgrave Community Centre fields.
