HORRIFIED neighbours have told how they woke to a nightmare early this morning after a car ploughed into three women walking along the road.

Two women have died and one woman is fighting for her life after a silver Citroen Saxo collided with them on Foxhall Road just after midnight today.

Helen Bright said she woke around 1.15am to see around 30 police and a number of ambulances outside her house and realised that an off duty nurse was trying to resuscitate one of the women in her garden.

She said: “When I looked out of the front window I could not believe it.

“There were people in my garden, lots of police cars and an enormous amount of damage.

“It was unbelievable, there was debris everywhere. The impact was just horrendous.

“I am still in a state of shock, I can't take it all in. You think you are safe walking on the pavement.”

The crash happened outside the home of Janet Pearse, whose wall was demolished by the car.

She said: “The damage that I have had to my house does not in any way compare with what has happened to those poor girls.

“I heard a terrific bang and as soon as I saw the accident I phoned the police and ambulance.

“I have never seen so many police. It was horrific really; police were running about all over the place to see if there were any other casualties.

“It was so horrendous. I cannot envisage how it happened.”

Toni Foulger, who lives opposite Mrs Pearse and Ms Bright said she had woken to a loud bang and had immediately rushed outside with blankets and extension cables to help the emergency services.

She and her next door neighbour Gemma Smith laid flowers at the scene this morning.

“It just looked like absolute carnage,” she said. “We didn't see what happened but were just trying to do anything we could.

“I just feel for the girls and their families, that's what the flowers are for, to pay our respects.”

Luke Marjoram was in the beer garden of the nearby Heathlands pub at the time of the accident.

He said: “We heard a big crash and I quickly ran over to the fence and saw a car in the middle of the road.

“We went inside and told everyone there had been an accident and we went out to see if we could help.

“When we got there we realised that some girls had been involved and everyone was running around trying to find blankets for them.”

Mr Marjoram said paramedics frantically tried to resuscitate the girls before taking them away in an ambulance.

“The police arrived and kept everyone at the scene for a little while to find out what had happened,” he added.

Jeni Kuijpers, who was also in the Heathlands pub when the incident happened, said: “My heart goes out to the poor innocent girls that unnecessarily lost their lives. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to the girls and their families. They were still young and have had their lives stolen. I hope that this tragedy never happens again.”
