Over-running engineering works are causing disruption to services on the mainline in Suffolk and Essex this morning.

Greater Anglia said the problems had caused some lines to be blocked between Hackney and London Liverpool Street, affecting services including the Great Eastern Mainline between Norwich and London.

Many of the busy early morning services towards the capital have been delayed or cancelled as a result.

Trains calling at stations including Chelmsford, Colchester, Manningtree, Ipswich, Stowmarket and Diss have been affected by the disruption.

Services between London Liverpool Street and Stansted have also been affected.

“Due to over running engineering works at Liverpool Street, train services running via Hackney Downs and Liverpool Street will be affected,” Greater Anglia said.

“A set of points needs replacing. Network Rail engineers are at the site, working on the affected area.”

The disruption to services was initially expected to continue until 8am. However, Greater Anglia later revised the time to 9.30am.

By 8.45 the operator said the lines had reopened but disruption was likely to continue.
