Crowds gathered outside the new Aldi supermarket at Pinewood for its official opening.
Ipswich mayor Roger Fern was joined by Olympic gold medallist Laura Unsworth – a member of the victorious women’s hockey team.
Huge crowds gathered at the store before the opening – there were golden envelopes for the first shoppers, giving them a chance to win prizes including a star prize of a new television set.
The store, near Suffolk One, is the third Aldi store to open in the Ipswich area and follows existing Aldi branches in Meredith Road in Whitton and at the Rosehill Centre off Felixstowe Road.
There are 55 jobs at the store and the company, which has seen its popularity soar over recent years, is recruiting for more staff in the Ipswich area.
