THE possibility of a major new exhibition and conference centre in the county has been given the backing of Suffolk Coastal.

An in-depth feasibility study costing more than £11,000 is being carried out to see whether Suffolk Showground would be suitable for such a venture.

Suffolk Coastal has agreed to give £2,789 from the general economic development budget towards the cost of the study.

So far, London based consultants, Grant Leisure Group has conducted a study involving business groups to see what is needed in the area.

The idea of an exhibition and conference centre was just one of the recommendations to come out of the survey.

Now quantitative market research is to be carried out to make sure the centre would not turn out to be a white elephant.

District councillor Nigel Barratt, chairman of the Economic Development and European Issues sub-committee, said: "This is a potentially very exciting project that could be a major addition to this district and to Suffolk."
