Another dig on the Cornhill has started to help prepare the ground for next year’s rebuilding work in front of Ipswich Town Hall.
A team of experts has removed some of the paving in front of the Town Hall and Mannings pub to do tests on the ground and to check on where utilities are buried before work on the Cornhill starts in earnest in the new year.
The work is due to take a few weeks but the market should be able to operate around the dig which only occupies part of the Cornhill.
It has been sealed off by fences and is not expected to cause serious problems for market stalls or shoppers. It should be ready by autumn.
The major work is due to start after the Christmas season, in January, and is expected to take about 10 months to complete – officials at the borough council and at Ipswich Central are hoping that the new-look Cornhill will be ready to be revealed to the public in time for the Christmas festivities in 2018.
