A NEW 17-storey block of flats could dominate the skyline beside the Ipswich Waterfront.

A property company has applied for planning permission to build the new block on land currently occupied by the former Burton's factory.

If it's given approval by borough councillors, part of the existing factory will be converted into 33 flats and the new 17-storey tower block would have 98 flats and a waterside restaurant.

The application has been made on behalf of Status Property Group Ltd.

It would provide a major housing boost for an area of the Waterfront which is also set to play host to a new 12-storey block on the site of the former St. Peter's Warehouse which was all but destroyed by fire 20 months ago.

And the former Burton's "island site" – between Star Lane and College Street – could have a further 70 flats built there.

Meanwhile Redrow Homes have submitted a new planning application for 121 flats on Neptune Marina's land on the south side of Coprolite Street.

Redrow joined Neptune's Alan Swann as development partner for the site last year – outline permission for flats on the site has already been granted.

The new application would include shops, a chandlery, marina offices, and a restaurant as well as the flats themselves.
