SEEKING ways to help young people live and work in Suffolk will be a key theme for a new council chairman in his year of office.

John Richardson was elected as chairman of Suffolk Coastal at the authority's annual meeting and his first duties will include attending golden jubilee celebrations across the district.

"During the coming year I am particularly looking forward to meeting people from the voluntary, business and education sectors, as I am anxious to seek ways of encouraging able young people to be able to live and work in Suffolk," he said.

Mr Richardson, who took over as chairman from Doreen Savage, has been a councillor since 1991, representing Aldeburgh, and for the last three years has been the chairman of the development control sub-committee.

A former pupil of Orwell Park School, Nacton, and Repton School, he gained an honours degree at Oxford in geography and was awarded a full blue for squash rackets and a half blue for lawn tennis.

He was commissioned into the Suffolk Regiment and the Kings African Rifles during his National Service.
