IPSWICH-based power giant Eastern Energy today unveiled its new corporate identity.

In a break from decades of tradition, the name Eastern has been dropped – from now on customers will get their power from TXU Energi.

TXU also owns Manchester-based Norweb Energi and the two companies will operate under the same name.

The company has more than five million domestic and small business customers, including a million gas customers.

"Although we retain our strongest presence in our traditional areas like East Anglia and the north west, we have won customers across the country since deregulation," said company vice-president Peter Bennell.

The company might be dropping the name Eastern from its name, but its links with the area remain strong.

Its corporate offices are at Wherstead and it has large offices elsewhere in Ipswich.

These will be replaced by the new UK Business Centre about to be built in Russell Road following the demolition of its old offices there last month.

And the company's links now extend to its sponsorship of Ipswich Town FC, whose players wear the new logo on their shirts.

"Ipswich Town have a marvellous reputation throughout the country and they are now playing in Europe where we also operate.

"It gives us the perfect opportunity to promote our business and look forward to their success in the new season," said Mr Bennell.
