New look for town

FELIXSTOWE is a town with some problems, but huge potential, according to consultants drawing up a masterplan to shape the future of the resort's seafront and town centre.

David Lock Associates have been commissioned to carry out the project and produce a blueprint which it is hoped will then attract millions of pounds in grant aid and investment to regenerate the seaside town.

The company last year undertook a £100,000 project to research into the resort's problems and needs to identify the issues it faces.

Its conclusions were controversial, although not dissimilar from many other coastal communities where there has been little development, a decline in traditional resort activities and an ageing population because of its popularity for retirement.

The report warned that without around 3,000 new homes, more businesses and attractions, the population would reduce, young people continue to move away, and at least one school close and leisure facilities and shops suffer.

Lawrence Revill, project director for David Lock Associates, said: “We have become advocates for Felixstowe in recent years.

“It has some problems but huge potential.

“We aim to help local people develop ideas for how it can be revitalised as a resort and also as a great place to live and to work.”

A new website has been set up for the masterplan - and residents are being encouraged to give their views.

People can e-mail felixstowe@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk or write to Felixstowe Futures, Suffolk Coastal District Council, Melton Hill, Woodbridge, IP12 1AU.

The project team would like to hear about ideas anyone has seen in other towns in the UK and abroad, which could be made to work in Felixstowe.

Community leaders will be briefed on the work taking place at a meeting at Felixstowe Town Hall on May 25.

The project, run by the Felixstowe and Trimleys Peninsula Futures Group, is focussing on the seafront area from Cobbold's Point to Landguard Point, and significant parts of the town centre and surrounding areas.

The masterplan will suggest proposals to rejuvenate the town as a seaside resort, enhance the shopping environment and provide improved access between the seafront and the town centre.

An exhibition will be held in early summer and work on the masterplan is expected to be completed in the autumn.
