CAN you think of a brand new name for a brand new school?

CAN you think of a brand new name for a brand new school?

If so, the staff and governors of Raeburn Infant and Orwell Junior Schools in Ipswich would like to hear your ideas.

The two schools are due to close at the end of August next year, and move to a new primary school which is starting to take shape on Raeburn Road.

Now the hunt is on for a new name which will help to create a new identity as two schools become one, under the leadership of Sue Lines, headteacher at Raeburn, who will become head of the combined school.

Staff are also appealing for people to share their memories of the schools, which have been an important part of the community for more than 60 years.

"We want a completely new identity – ideally something that is connected with the local area, but without being too specific," said Andrew Rowe, acting headteacher at Orwell Junior.

He said they didn't really want a name which mentioned either Orwell or Raeburn – so Raewell or Orburn will not fit the bill!

They would also rather not go for anything too closely connected with either Greenwich or Gainsborough alone, since the school will have pupils from both areas.

"It will be the governing body which decides on the name, but they wanted to get some ideas from people in the area," said Mr Rowe.

Both Orwell and Raeburn schools will be holding a series of special events during July next year, and they are keen to hear from former pupils or teachers who have memories to share.

"We want to compile a book of memories, which will then be kept as a sort of keepsake at the new school," said Mr Rowe.

He said they were likely to organise reunions for ex-pupils and teachers, and hoped to capture some of the events on video for posterity.

If you have memories to share or an idea for the new name, or would like to visit the schools before they close, please write to either Andrew Rowe at Orwell Junior School, Robeck Road, Ipswich IP3 0HS or Sue Lines at Raeburn Infants School, Raeburn Road, Ipswich, IP3 0EW.
