MOVES are afoot to create hundreds of extra nursery and playgroup places across Suffolk.

Now parents and carers are being encouraged to have their say about the plans – which will make free early education available to more three-year-olds across the county.

Next week a series of consultations will be launched by Suffolk County Council and the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership.

A series of meetings are being held to explain to parents, carers and existing childcare organisations how more early education places could be created for three-year-olds.

At the moment early education is free for all four-year-olds and some

three-year-olds. The county council aims to extend this to all three-year-olds by early 2004.

"The aim is to ask people what they want and what their needs are," said assistant education officer Christine Orr.

"We want to make sure that we develop early education places that are accessible, affordable and of a high quality. We hope that people will take this opportunity to tell us about the needs of families in their local community."

She said Government funding was available to help create extra places for childcare with an early education element.

An options paper has been prepared to explain the different ways that these

places could be created, for example in playgroups, day nurseries or through

childminder networks.

The consultation meetings for parents and carers from Ipswich are being held on the following dates: November 6, North West Ipswich (Castle Hill and Whitton wards), Castle Hill Junior School, Dryden Road.

November 12: South West Ipswich (Bridge, Stoke Park, Chantry and Sprites wards): Hillside Primary School, Belstead Avenue. November 12: North East Ipswich (St John's ward): Copleston High School, Copleston Road. November 14: South East Ipswich (St Clements, Gainsborough and Priory Heath wards), Murrayside Centre, Nacton Road. All meetings run from 7.30 to 9pm.
