POLICE investigating the rape of a 19-year-old girl in Ipswich today released more CCTV footage in a bid to trace three men seen in the area.

The new footage shows the victim leaving Kartouche nightclub on Princes Street at about 12.

POLICE investigating the rape of a 19-year-old girl in Ipswich today released more CCTV footage in a bid to trace three men seen in the area.

The new footage shows the victim leaving Kartouche nightclub on Princes Street at about 12.20am on July 28.

The girl, from the Colchester area, is seen to walk down Princes Street towards the CCTV camera, in the direction of Ipswich Railway Station on Ranelagh Road.

The footage also shows three men, who were close to the nightclub when the victim left it.

A few minutes later she was approached by the rapist, as she sat on a bench opposite the railway station.

He then walked with her down Ranelagh Road, up Birkfield Drive, and raped her on a footpath off Stone Lodge Lane, near the Pauls Sports and Social Club.

Detective Inspector John Quinton said: "It is vital that we trace these three men. All three walked along Princes Street towards the Railway Station, within yards of the victim.

"At this stage there is nothing to link any of these men to the attack. We have shown the film to the victim, but she did not identify any of these men as her attacker.

"However, we need to trace these men both to eliminate them from our enquiries and because they could have vital information which could help catch the rapist."

A white man, in his 30s or 40s, and wearing light-coloured clothes, is pictured walking down Princes Street. He may have seen the victim in the club foyer, and she then leaves the nightclub and walks down the road immediately behind him.

A second white man in dark clothing, walks from the direction of Commercial Road, and passes Kartouche just after the victim leaves. He walks down Princes Street immediately behind her.

A third white man, also wearing dark clothes, stands near the club entrance. As the victim leaves, he initially walks off towards Commercial Road but then turns round and walks down Princes Street, some yards behind the victim and the other men.

None of the trio have been identified yet, and DI Quinton stressed how important it was for police to trace everybody who was in the area of the railway station, Ranelagh Road and Birkfield Drive between midnight and 1.30am on July 28.

He also wants to trace a white man wearing dark clothes who is not seen on the CCTV clip, but was dropped off outside the club by a taxi – which was then taken by two women. He entered the club just as the victim was about to leave and may have seen her in the foyer.

More CCTV footage and an e-fit picture of the rapist - who is in his early 20s, plump, 5ft8ins to 5ft9ins, and had spiky short brown hair - have been published in the Evening Star.

An incident room has been set up and about 20 officers are working on the case.

More than 100 calls have been received from the public and nearly 50 statements have been taken.
