CAN you help a group of youngsters turn an empty room into a facility for teenagers with learning difficulties?

Ten Princes Trust volunteers have started work on a four-week project to change an unused room at Belstead School, Ipswich, into a relaxing sensory experience.

They are still in desperate need of some items for the room, especially a carpet, and are appealing for help.

Project worker Yan Gillett, 22, of Ipswich, whose ambition is work in the community, said: "We are relying on donations from companies or individuals.

"Some of the items on our list that we need include florescent strip lights, toys, fairy lights, lava lamps, carpets, pillows, paint and blinds. We are also looking for sponsorship from firms.

"At the moment the room is dark and dingy. There's nothing there. It was just blocked off.

"There was glue on the wall and paint on the carpet – which is wafer thin. We want to change and give it the room a calming atmosphere, a sort of Snoezelen for the kids."

The project involves everything from design to fundraising and completion. The youngsters, aged 16 to 24, also involved children at the school by sending out a questionnaire to ask for their thoughts as well as imputing their own ideas.

The group spent a week planning but was all systems go on when the transformation work started earlier this week.

Head teacher Sue Chesworth said: "We are very grateful that the youngsters are doing this. It is something that we would have had difficulty doing out of our own school budget.

"The room will benefit older 16 to 19 year old students. It is good that young people are doing up the room for other young people."

They have already started fundraising by holding car boot sales tomorrow and October 7 at Portman Road and a car wash at Martlesham.

But they are still in desperate need of funds.

If you can sponsor them, or have any fundraising ideas please contact Yan Gillett on 07876 044782.
