A NEW Tesco express store is on its way after builders moved in to start fitting the premises out.

The supermarket chain began work after planning officers gave permission to build the shop on the site in St Matthew's Street, Ipswich, which was formerly a furniture store.

Fourteen staff have already been offered jobs at the new outlet, some of them ex-Woolworths employees.

Plant and machinery - including refrigeration equipment - has been delivered to the store and the windows are currently covered.

The new store is only a stone's throw from the site that was occupied in St Matthew's street before it opened the Copdock Mill superstore in 1987.

New store manager Nick Thorpe Said: “We've recruited a great team of people and I'm looking forward to working with my new staff.

“We are delighted to be opening a Tesco Express store in Ipswich, and looking forward to playing an active role in the local community.”

The shop will be open every day from 6am to 11pm and will include a range of more than 2,500 products, a bakery and a free cash machine.
