IS IT the end of the road for the Ipswich Community Playbus?

The future of the bus has today reached crisis point after a vital bid for £198,000 lottery funding was turned down.

The funding would have secured the facility and its employees for the next three years.

But the bus, along with two full-time jobs and one part time job, is hanging in the balance as it could be axed at Christmas.

Alison Catchpole, chairwoman of the registered charity, had her hopes set on the lottery funding and said to lose the playbus would be a huge blow to the people of Ipswich.

"I was really shocked because I thought we would get the funding," she said. "If we had the funding it would have given us three years to find more money.

"My children grew up with the bus and so many people rely on it. There are people who don't meet people any other way and it provides them with somewhere to interact.

"I know that we can continue until the end of October.

"We have also applied for an anti-poverty grant that will keep us going up until Christmas.

"But I don't know what more we can do. If we don't get the funding we could close."

A meeting is to be held where committee members will decide the next move forward.

Ironically it comes after a new bus was unveiled last month and an appeal through The Evening Star for more committee members paid off.

"Some of the new committee members have some brilliant ideas for fundraising," said Alison. "But it is not as if we have a year to do it. It is hard to fund raise at such short notice."

The bus costs £80,000 a year to run. As well as providing play facilities for children, staff are also able to offer advice on a whole range of subjects, including health and money.

nIf you would like to make a donation to help keep the bus running send it to Ipswich Community Playbus, c/o Ipswich Buses, 7 Constantine Road, Ipswich.

n If you have experience with applying for funding please contact the Alison on 221521.
