A NEW vicar will has been appointed to the civic church of Ipswich, St Mary-le-Tower.

Rev Charles Jenkin, who is currently team rector in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, will take the reigns at the church on September 22.

Mr Jenkin, 54, succeeds the Venerable Peter Townley, the previous vicar at the town centre church who was appointed Archdeacon of Pontefract earlier this year.

Today Mr Jenkin said: “I am very happy about the appointment and looking forward to it.”

He should be able to find out more about the town before he moves here because his current boss, Bishop of Leicester Rt Rev Tim Stevens, is a former bishop of Dunwich.

Mr Jenkin will be inducted by Rt Rev Nigel Stock, the bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, at St Mary-le-Tower church during a service beginning at 7.30pm on September 22.
