A YOUNG Ipswich man has narrowly escaped jail after breaking another man's nose at a nightclub.

David Tooke head butted Adrian Game then punched him in the face breaking his nose and loosening his teeth.

Judge John Holt, at Ipswich Crown Court, said it was a "nasty and serious" assault at Liquid Nightclub on New Year's Eve.

He warned 19-year-old Tooke that the offence justified a prison sentence. However the court heard, on Thursday, April 3, that Tooke, of Westwood Avenue, was very drunk at the time of the attack and was of previous good character with a good work record.

Judge Holt ordered Tooke to do 200-hours unpaid work but he warned: "If you breach this order this offence merit eight months in prison."

Tooke was also made the subject of a six-month curfew order preventing him from leaving his home between 8pm and 6am each night.

Tooke, who pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm, was ordered to pay £1,250 compensation to Mr Game and £85 towards court costs.

Stephen Dyble, for Tooke, said his client had put £500 away to pay Mr Game immediately and would pay the remainder within six months.

Judge Holt said Tooke had brought "shame" on his law abiding family who were supporting him from the court's public gallery.
