No more dough for Albert

HE has baked far more than a baker's dozen, during almost half a century in the business.

But the time has come for Albert Smith to brush off his floured apron and hang it up for good.

But the time has come for Albert Smith to brush off his floured apron and hang it up for good.

In 1966, Mr Smith and his brother John took over the Aldeburgh business their father bought in 1950.

They bought another outlet in Leiston in 1974, but May 24 this year will see their enterprises come to an end.

Smith's Bakery in the High Streets of Leiston and Aldeburgh have been sold on, and will continue to operate with the same staff of 14.

Many of the employees have been with the bakery for 20 years themselves.

Mr Smith, 60, said: "I have enjoyed the work. It is the sort of job where you get a sense of satisfaction - of seeing the bread coming out of the oven every day."

He said he had received many requests from customers over the years, and had made special orders such as huge doughnuts for birthday cakes.

He added: "I'm looking forward to doing more gardening, and I've got a narrow boat so I hope to spend more time on that."
