A CALL has gone out for people power to be harnessed to help halt plans for a Sizewell C and other new nuclear plants elsewhere in the UK.

It came from Charles Barnett, chairman of the Shut Down Sizewell Campaign, at the group's annual meeting where he was re-elected for a 21st term of office.

Mr Barnett urged people to press for the rejection of Government plans for a new generation of nuclear power stations following the closure of Sizewell A and other first generation Magnox plants.

Sizewell A ceased electricity generation on December 31 after a 40-year lifetime.

“It (the Government) must abandon this crazy scheme to build new plants,” Mr Barnett said.

“Nuclear power is not the answer to climate change and spending more money on this outdated technology will only divert resources away from renewable forms of energy and energy conservation and efficiency.”

He also called on the Government to abandon plans to short-circuit planning applications for new power generation schemes.

Ministers are proposing to allow safety and security issues to be resolved on a national basis, rather than at public inquiries held locally.
