A NEW runway should not be built at Stansted Airport, a report from MPs said today,

The MPs added they were "not convinced a national case for an additional runway at Stansted has been made".

But the House of Commons Transport Committee report did back the Government's support for a third runway at Heathrow.

But MPs said they were concerned at the "lack of clarity' on the timescale for completion of the expansion project at the west London airport.

On Stansted, the MPs said, taking everything into account, it was unlikely that a second runway could be completed at the Essex airport before 2019 - the year when the current restriction on a second runway at Gatwick expired.

The report said: "The Government should reconsider whether the additional runway, if required, should be located at Gatwick rather than Stansted.”
