A top secondary school in Ipswich is set to be run by two headteachers, after the existing head has expressed a desire for a better work/life balance.

From September 1, Northgate High School in Ipswich will be run jointly by incumbent headteacher David Hutton and Rowena Mackie, currently the school’s deputy head since 2012.

A statement from Mr Hutton on the school’s website said: “This change is taking place in response to a request I made to the governing body, to consider allowing me to work part-time (4 days a week) throughout the 2017/18 academic year.”

“I made the request because after 20+ years working at Northgate, initially as deputy head and for the last eight years as headteacher, I would appreciate a slightly different work-life balance.”

He added: “Schools operate in a dynamic environment where change is essential if forward momentum is to be maintained.”

“I have been party to the many changes that have taken place at Northgate since 1997, remain totally committed to this institution that has become such a fundamental part of my life, and look forward to working alongside Miss Mackie with energy and enthusiasm to lead the school successfully through the next chapter of its history.”

Mr Hutton will work four days a week, while Miss Mackie will take complete charge of the school on Wednesdays, although Mr Hutton said it would retain the flexibility to best serve the needs of the school.
