WELCOME to the latest instalment of our chronological look through the picture archives.

Here we are remembering the year 1964 and hope that these pictures spark some happy memories.

In today’s collection - see gallery above right - we have images from the opening of a new fencing club opens in Ipswich in September 1964; Prime Minister Sir Alex Douglas-Hume signing autographs at Ipswich Station, also in September; and a fashion show held at Corders Department Store in Ipswich.

Do you recognise anyone in these pictures

Our photographers captured a wayzgoose party leaving Ipswich for their holiday in September 1964; and leopards from Chipperfields Circus arriving at Ipswich Docks in March of that year.

Chantry School’s annual fete was held in June of that year and our photographers were there to capture the action. We also have a photo showing preparation for the holiday season in Felixstowe in March.

Do you remember these events?

Meanwhile, we have received a letter from Liz Dunnett (nee Smith) after we published a picture from 1963 of St Matthew’s School pupils.

Liz writes: “Your photograph last week from 1963 depicting St Matthew’s School pupils in the infants playground brought back many happy memories.

“Although I cannot remember the occasion, I believe the two lads pulling the cart are Orlando and Tristram Elmhirst, who were both in my class.

“The girls are dressed very much as I remember – our winter uniform was a very smart pinafore with shirt and tie, and summer was a blue checked dress. Short trousers were worn by the boys all year round.

“As seen in the photograph, plimsoles and not shoes were worn throughout the day, and not just for games.

“During my time at the school (1962 -1968), the headmaster was Mr Denby who was very strict and was known to use the slipper if need be! Other teaching staff, included Miss Coleman (Reception), Mrs Robinson, Mr Cansdale and Mr Robbins.”

Thanks for the letter, Liz.

Also responding to a Photographic Memories picture from a couple of weeks ago was BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Rachel Sloane.

She writes: “The Ipswich Star featured a photo of me with some Guides in 2000 a couple of weeks ago.

“The Guide Movement introduced Guide Ambassadors and asked me, as a presenter on BBC Suffolk, to become one. This event was to present me with my Ambassador’s badge.

“I took on the role for 12 months and had a great time visiting groups, fetes etc and even had a weekend camping at Hallowtree – which was featured and photographed in the EADT.

“Listeners to my radio show heard reports throughout that year. I had never been a Brownie or Guide before as I belonged to the St John Ambulance Brigade Cadets as a child and teenager.”

Thanks for your letter, Rachel, and, as ever, if any readers have memories you wish to share with Star readers, drop us a line at the addresses here and we’ll feature your contributions at a later date.
