Hundreds of people headed to the site in Sidegate Lane West in 1982 to witness the new track being opened and take part in the many athletics events being held to mark the occasion.

Ann Smith, who was Mayor of Ipswich at the time, officially opened the new track with a ribbon cutting ceremony and addressed the crowd with a speech.

The sports centre is located on the same site at Northgate High School, but is used by a number of clubs and groups across the community, and remains a popular venue for sporting events today.
