JUST days after they were the victims of a wicked crime in their own home, the smiles are firmly back on the faces of pensioners Grace and Harry Talbott.

Earlier this month, the Talbotts were conned out of their savings by burglars who tricked their way in to the couple's Ipswich home.

Now the couple have been on the receiving end of kindness and support in the shape of flowers and a food hamper from supermarket Asda and a £30 cheque from an anonymous well-wisher.

Christine Spalding, department manager at Asda said the crime suffered by the Talbotts made them want to do something to help them.

She said "I saw the story in the Evening Star and we thought it would be a nice thing to do. We decided on a hamper rather than a straightforward cheque as it is a bit more personal.

"We found out that they shop at Asda, but we would have done this for anyone. It makes us happy to do this sort of thing, as they are very much part of our community".

Asda staff Duncan Frost and Moira Ennis, joined Christine to present a hamper full of chocolates, meat, fruit and vegetables and other household goods, including a bottle of sherry.

The couple were also handed a £30 cheque which was anonymously donated to them by a Star reader.

A smiling Harry, 84, said the kind donation from Asda and the cheque were very much appreciated.

He said: "It just goes to show there are some good people out there. When something like this happens, you have to laugh really. It was such a shock when it happened but everyone has been so helpful since – we're just not used to all this attention."

Grace, 82 said: "We can't thank people enough. We never knew we had so many friends and everyone has been magnificent. We would especially like to thank the person that gave us the cheque."

The couple added that they were now looking forward to putting the incident behind them and getting back to a normal life.

n The trickster thieves struck at their home on February 5. The couple were watching television when a man rang their doorbell repeatedly.

Mr Talbott opened the door to see a man in their neighbour's garden claiming he was investigating noises.

Minutes later the Talbott's were aware of someone upstairs and money for bills was stolen.
