A HUGE evacuation operation swung into action today after a major fire broke out on a North Sea oil platform.Seven helicopters were used to lift crewmembers off the Thistle Alpha after smoke and flames began pouring from the platform, located about 120miles north east of Sumburgh in Shetland, at about 8.30am today.

Seven helicopters were used to lift crewmembers off the Thistle Alpha after smoke and flames began pouring from the platform, located about 120miles north east of Sumburgh in Shetland, at about 8.30am today.
There had been fears for the safety of the 159 crew but the firefighting effort succeeded in extinguishing the flames by 11am and there were no reports of casualties.
